The Welsh physics teachers conference - Brecon 2022 NW237 / A22
Summary
FOR TEACHERS IN WALES ONLY:
The day will involve key note talks and a choice of highly engaging workshops. Teachers will be asked to register for workshops directly with the Institute of Physics. Technicians attending will have a bespoke programme. Suitable for secondary Physics teachers and technicians.
Morning sessions:
0945-1020: ‘Future Opportunities for Inspection and Support’ - Owen Evans CBE, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education and Training in Wales (HMCI) ESTYN
1020-1115: ‘GCSE and GCE Physics Update’ - Helen Francis, Domain Leader, Maths and Science, WJEC
Helen will provide an update on GCSE examinations and discuss Science and GCE Physics.
1115-1215: ‘The Magick of Matter’ - Dr Felix Flicker, Cardiff University
Sit back and watch and listen to Dr Felix Flicker as he introduces the magic of condensed matter physics, from the subtle spells that conjure crystals from chaos, to creating new particles which have never before been seen.
Afternoon sessions:
‘LEGO Physics’ - Lewis Matheson, Physics Online Ltd KS3 KS4 KS5
‘Phyzzing Physics Cooking - Linking physics and cooking’ - Alison Alexander and Ruth Wiltsher Institute of Physics KS3 KS4
‘Things you don’t find in books’ – Dr Panos Athanasopoulos, Head of Physics, Prestatyn High School KS5
‘Physics in Archaeology’ – Anthony Clowser, Ysgol John Bright and Keith Jones, Institute of Physics KS3 KS4 KS5
‘The Devastatingly Dramatic Climate Show’ - Sue Cavell, Science2Life KS3 KS4
Technician Workshop FTECH3: Ripple Tanks and Teltron Tubes
Setting up the ripple tank to show different wave patterns. Teltron tubes – these expensive fragile pieces of kit are often left dusty in cupboards – we will go through how to safely set them up with a brief explanation of what they can show. (Beginner – Experienced)
‘Variety!’ - Helen Pollard, Ogden Trust KS3 KS4
‘Quantum Physics – the next generation’ - Dr Aldo Ejlli, Dr Lorenzo Aiello and Dr Eyal Schwartz, Cardiff University KS4 KS5
‘Novel practicals across a range of GCSE and A-Level topics’ - Dr Daniel Jones, Head of Physics, Monmouth School for Boys KS4 KS5
‘Forces in Flight’ - Richard Bonella KS3 KS4
‘Harry Potter - Science or Magic?’ - Edward Male, Henry Tudor School KS3 KS4
Technician workshops will run in parallel where Paul Cook, Honorary Member of the IOP, will lead a series of workshops focusing on practical Physics.
0945-1115: Technician Workshop FTECH1: Current Affairs
Simple circuitry for non-specialists and making the most of using a multimeter – fault finding/ checking components. (Non-specialist – Beginner)
1115-1215: Technician Workshop FTECH2: Working confidently with Physics equipment
We’ll be setting up common Physics demos – oscilloscopes with a signal generator/speaker and microphone (if you have an oscilloscope and are unsure how to set it up, bring it along) – standing waves. (Beginner)
Workshop FTECH4: Spinning Beats
Making motors (getting a Westminster motor kit to work) – making homemade speakers – who can make the loudest? (Beginner – More Experienced)
